There are three stages during the process of changing the Koala from a baby to an adult. The three stages are embryo, young mammal and adult koala bear. The first stage is embryo, located all they way on top of the three pictures. The baby Koala is called a joey and it is about the size of a jellybean at this stage. Its bright pink and has no hair. It can’t see or hear, but it’s an excellent climber. It climbs into the mom’s furry pouch and it sniffs one out of two nipples and attaches to it. The Koala lives in the pouch for about 6-7 months and then their eyes start to open and the joey begins to peek out. The second stage is a young mammal, located right under the joey. The young mammal Koala drinks only mother’s milk for the first 6-7 months and remains in the pouch for that time. It slowly starts growing and developing a lot of hair, fur, ears and more. In 22 weeks its eyes will open and it begins to peep out of the pouch. For about 22-30 weeks it begins to feed upon a substance called “pap” which the mother produces in addition to milk. The adult Koala bear, has soft thick grey or brown hair on their backs, while the fur on their stomach is white. An adult Koala has a large hairless nose and round ears. They measure about 64-76 centimeters in length and weigh about 7-14 kilograms. This is shown under the young mammal.
The Koala doesn’t have many closely related extinct species. One of the surviving species is a wombat and they both have common ancestors. The giant Koala is also a close related specie with the Koala but it is extinct.
Over the years the Koalas’ population have slowly been decreasing and this could be called evolution. Evolution is the change in the characteristics of biological populations over successive generations.
